Toyota unveils 210-horsepower, WRC-inspired Yaris ahead of official Geneva debut…

The Geneva Motor Show is still well over a month away, but that hasn’t stopped Toyota dropping some official pictures of its 210-horsepower, rally-inspired Yaris, which will make its debut at the prestigious auto event in March.

Set to be the firm’s first hot hatch in more than a decade, the as-yet unnamed Yaris will have many of its rivals – such as the Ford Fiesta ST and Peugeot 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport – quaking in their boots.

The Yaris on steroids has been developed by Toyota in collaboration with the brand’s rally arm, but it isn’t yet clear whether a full production version will transpire in the future.

Powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers over 210 horsepower, the Yaris’s release is no doubt designed to coincide with Toyota’s return to the World Rally Championship with a Yaris WRC at the forthcoming Monte Carlo Rally.

Visually, the high-performance Yaris gets a more muscular-looking front bumper with a large air dam and a strip of red trim. It’s also got black mirror caps; a new rear bumper that incorporates an air diffuser; a roof-mounted spoiler and a centrally-mounted exhaust outlet. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels dressed in Bridgestone Potenza tyres add a finishing touch to the overall look.

The updates continue inside, although Toyota hasn’t actually revealed any specifics at the time of writing. An improved infotainment system; racing seats and some flashy trim perhaps?

According to Toyota Europe: “The entire Yaris lineup will benefit from the similar design modifications, with a new front face, a new rear style, and a modernised interior.” In addition, Toyota says that various technical improvements will increase the overall comfort and handling of the standard sub-compact hatchback – a reality that should make Toyota’s most-affordable model more enticing to potential buyers.
