WRX STI Type RA and a high-performance BRZ model to be revealed in just three days’ time…
Last week, we told you about a mysterious teaser tweet from Subaru USA that featured little more than a picture of a huge, STI-branded carbon fibre spoiler and a note saying we’ll learn more on June 8.
Now we can reveal what Subaru has got up its sleeve…
Subaru spokesman Dominick Infante confirmed to AutoGuide that the Japanese firm will actually unveil two new high-performance models from STI on June 8 – the WRX STI Type RA and a high-performance BRZ, which is likely to be known as the BRZ STI (something that Subaru has yet to confirm).
The WRX STI Type RA brings back a name from the JDM that was first introduced on a 1993 WRX (the car shown at the top of this post is a 1998 model). Like today’s STI, the Type RA was lighter and more hardcore than the standard WRX.
While no specs are available yet, Subaru has whetted our appetites by releasing a teaser image of the RA’s carbon fibre roof (below).
As well as the carbon fibre roof, the RA – which will be based on the 2018 WRX STI – will also get a rear wing, new Bilstein dampers and upgraded Recaro seats. “Gearing and engine upgrades” that will boost performance are also promised and, of course, in great WRX STI tradition, the overall look will be topped off with gold-finish, 19-inch, BBS wheels.
Unfortunately, we still don’t know any more about the BRZ Subaru has in the pipeline (but we hopefully will in three days’ time). All we can do is hope for some under-the-bonnet upgrades and not just handling improvements.
Subaru also released an interesting video to coincide with the news of the RA’s return. The video below shows a race-prepped Type RA NBR (for Nürburgring) Special testing in the rain and is a good indicator of where a production version might head. Subaru is looking to break the four-door-sedan Nürburgring lap record with it this summer.
