2018 Honda Civic Type R 0-100 time revealed

Honda has just released some performance figures for its 2018 Civic Type-R, claims it will be “quickest car in its class”.

The much-anticipated 2018 Honda Civic Type-R will hit the magic 100km/h mark in 5.7 seconds, according to performance details released by the Japanese firm this week, which give us some idea of what to expect once the hot hatch hits Australian shores later this year.

Furthermore, it will have a top speed of 272km/h, making it “the fastest accelerating and quickest car in its class”, Honda says.

But what about the Ford Focus RS? That’s a full one second quicker to 100km/h, but boasts a slightly slower top speed of 266km/h. Some may argue that as the RS is all-wheel drive it’s not strictly in the same class as the Type-R, but it’s hard to deny that the two cars will be rivals in Australia.

Nevertheless, the fact that the Civic Type-R is the undisputed front-wheel drive king of the Nurburgring backs up Honda’s claims no end.

Despite early Type-R prototypes touring Australian dealerships, this is the first time we’ve heard about the hot hatch’s expected performance.

What we still don’t know, though, is the Type-R’s Down Under price tag. A sensible estimate (based on new European figures) would be right around the $50,000 mark – which puts the Honda slap bang in the realms of the Focus RS (from $50,990), Peugeot 308 GTi 270 ($49,990) and Volkswagen Golf R ($52,990).

The 2018 Civic Type-R will come with a new 2.0-litre turbo-four that makes 235kW and 400Nm. This will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission with a rev-matching feature. The driver can also choose between three driving modes – Comfort, Sport (default) and +R.

Headlining features include adaptive dampers, 20-inch ‘Berlina’ alloy wheels wrapped in 245/30 R20 tyres, 350mm ventilated front brake discs with 305mm solid rear units, as well as “carbon-fibre effect” exterior highlights to the side skirts and rear diffuser.
