Much-anticipated Subaru BRZ tS (tuned by STI) gets a lot of aero upgrades, but sadly no performance boosts.
After a short build-up period – which started with Subaru America tweeting a picture of huge, STI-branded carbon fibre spoiler – Subaru has now released the first images and full specifications of a sharper, more hardcore version of its rear wheel-drive BRZ coupe.
While the BRZ tS (as it’s known) doesn’t come with an ‘STI’ name tag, it is nevertheless the work of the company’s high performance division, Subaru Tecnica International.
With Sachs dampers, uprated springs and thicker under-bonnet strut bracing for added rigidity, it’s safe to say that the focus of the BRZ tS is definitely on an enhanced track day experience. Not convinced? Just take a look at the adjustable carbon-fibre rear spoiler, large front splitter, side skirts and lightweight, 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. Oh and let’s not forget the upgraded Brembo brakes!
On the inside, drivers (and passengers) are greeted with a black leather and Alcantara interior, plus a sporty, suede-clad steering wheel.
So what about the engine?
Since the BRZ came out, fans of the car have been yearning for a model that boasts some extra power. Sadly, the BRZ tS isn’t it.
That’s because it runs the BRZ’s standard 152kW/212Nm 2.0-litre flat-four-cylinder engine. It was hoped that the hotter BRZ would be an iteration of the turbocharged 225kW/450Nm BRZ STI concept Subaru filed a patent for last year. Who knows, maybe that’s in the pipeline too?
Subaru says that 500 BRZ tS models will be made – in blue, black or white paint – but they will all be left-hand drive and destined for North America. Subaru will announce pricing early next year.
There’s no word from Subaru Australia right now on whether the BRZ tS will be available Down Under in the future. As soon as there is, we’ll be sure to inform you.
