Acura MDX to Get Radical New Look & Big Apple Debut
Acura has released a teaser image of its 2017 MDX and it seems the luxury brand is continuing with the aggressive styling push.
Just last month, we gave you a heads up about Acura’s Precision Concept, which is looking to break the luxury vehicle division’s mould and steer it away from the ‘boring’ label it so often gets plastered with.
And, if the 2017 MDX is anything to go by, Acura is definitely continuing with the aggression-oriented styling in an effort to rebrand the brand.
Set to be unveiled at the 2016 New York Auto Show on March 23, the 2017 Acura MDX (shown above in the dark, orange-tinged teaser sketch) promises “substantial design enhancements, added luxury comfort and convenience features, and advanced new powertrain technology,” according to American Honda Motor Company executive vice president John Mendel.
Unfortunately, though, that’s about all we know at the moment as Acura doesn’t want to reveal too much right now.
It seems that the guys at the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, CA are going for a much bolder look for the 217 MDX and, while it may not have the razor-sharp lines of the Precision Concept, it’s not bad for an SUV.
The almost beak-like grille from past models has been done away with and replaced by one that is not dissimilar to the one found on the Precision Concept. Furthermore, the front and rear wings are more highly sculpted, giving the MDX a much tougher appearance at first glance.
At present, the seven-seater MDX is only available with a direct-injected 3.5-litre V6 engine which outputs 290-horsepower at 6,200 rpm. That engine currently powers the front wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. However, it can be paired with Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive System (SH-AWD) for an additional cost.
While many will think that nine gears sounds plenty already, it’s likely the new MDX will feature the all-new ten-speed automatic transmission that Honda announced a few months ago.
Acura is likely to reveal more about the 2017 MDX in the coming weeks, so we’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for the next iteration of the brand’s most successful crossover SUV in due course.
