All-New Honda Civic Type-R to Get CVT Option
It’s some drivers’ worst nightmare, but a continuously variable transmission looks certain to be offered on the all-new Honda Civic Type-R.
While work on Honda’s hottest Civic Type-R ever continues, some spicy details about it have emerged in a post on the CivicX forums.
According to the forum post, the November issue of Car magazine has a nice write up on the Civic Type-R, which includes information from no less than head engineer Mitsuru Kariya; lead designer Daisuke Tsutamori; and Honda Europe big shot Katsushi Inoue.
The trio confirmed that the all-new Civic Type-R will have a significantly lower centre of gravity compared to the standard version and power will exclusively come from the front wheels, contradicting some earlier reports that it might be all-wheel-drive.
Perhaps most interesting, though, is the fact the Civic Type-R will be optionally available with a CVT gearbox, which has been optimised for low-end acceleration. A six-speed manual transmission will be offered as standard, but a dual-clutch automatic doesn’t look to be on the cards.
When it comes to power, the new Civic Type-R will likely feature an evolved version of the current model’s engine – a turbocharged 2.0-litre, inline-4, which generates 305-horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. While no major power increase is expected, Honda will no doubt give hot hatch fans something, with rumours of 320-horsepower being circulated.
The next-generation Civic Type-R is expected to make it worldwide debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year. If that is indeed the case we can expect it to arrive in showrooms in time for the 2019 model year. The Civic Type-R’s main rivals will be the Ford Focus RS, Volkswagen Golf R and the Subaru WRX STI, three very capable pocket rockets that come as standard with all-wheel drive.
