Honda Achieve Pikes Peak Victory With Full-EV Power CR-Z
Honda took a full-EV power CR-Z to this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. And they won…
Remember we told you that Honda were planning to take a full-EV power CR-Z to this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event? Well, they were true to their word and not only did the CR-Z successfully complete the Pikes Peak course, it did so quicker than any car in its class.
Many people have billed the CR-Z hybrid as the spiritual successor to the much-loved CR-X, but few would have expected a fully-electric version to come first in its class at Pikes Peak.
It would seem that Honda is undergoing something of a performance renaissance at the moment- Acura NSX and Civic Type-R anyone? There are also even rumours that the next-generation CR-Z will ditch the hybrid setup in favour of a turbocharged engine.
However, it was an all-steering, all-wheel-drive, all-electric CR-Z that really turned heads at Pikes Peak. And with SuperGT racing star Tetsuya Yamano behind the wheel, the full-EV CR-Z managed a time of 10:23.829 – quick enough to place it first in the Exhibition Class.
Just to give you a comparison, the fastest time overall at Pikes Peak was 9:07.222 set by Rhys Millen driving an all-electric prototype – a first for Pikes Peak.
fastest time for the entire event was turned in by drifting star Rhys Millen, who won in an all-electric prototype — another Pikes Peak first — with a time of 9:07.222
“Pike’s Peak provides a unique opportunity to show the versatility and sportiness of our products – both Honda and Acura,” said Art St. Cyr, Honda Performance Development President. “Congratulations to our associates who all made fast and safe runs up a very challenging course, and earned three class victories, including the fastest overall motorcycle run. It also was exciting to see the new NSX supercar on track as the pace car.”
When you consider what Honda achieved at this year’s hill climb and take into account Millen’s fastest time, it definitely bodes well for the future of electric vehicles, right?
