Mazda MX-5 2.0-litre range launches in Australia
This month will see the launch of Mazda’s 2.0-litre Roadster range in Australia and yes, you should be excited about that…
Following the roaring success of Mazda’s latest generation 1.5-litre MX-5 in Australia, which went on sale in August, the Japanese firm have decided that a more powerful version of the roadster is what the Australian market needs.
That’s why a 2.0-litre version will hit showrooms this month, with the basic 2.0 Roadster available for $34,490 and the better-spec Roadster GT priced at $39,550.
Both models are mechanically identical, boasting 118kw of power at 6000rpm and are available with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions – the latter of which will cost an additional $2,000.
The MX-5 Roadster’s competitive pricing makes it an attractive alternative to Toyota’s hardtop 86 coupe, but according to Mazda Australia’s marketing director, it offers much more for the money:
“We have followed a similar strategy to our other core models: a very competitive entry price point. We’ve introduced two powerplants to the MX-5 for the first time ever, and a wide spread of variants means that we appeal to the broadest possible audience,” said Alastair Doak.
“We believe there is real opportunity to bring energy and exhilaration of an open-top, affordable sportscar to a whole new generation of younger car enthusiasts.”
Doak added that the previous NC-series priced out many buyers, especially younger drivers, but the new ND-series has addressed that problem, with 10% of models sold so far bought by individuals in their 20s.
It’s expected to be a similar story for the 2.0-liter variant, of which 170 units have already been pre-ordered by budding Mazda enthusiasts.
“Our research shows some people – some young buyers – weren’t even aware of the MX-5, and there were enthusiasts who wanted it and couldn’t afford it. This step means it’s now a real option for them; and the younger audience as well,” said Doak.
With the new 2.0-litre Roadster GT tipping the scales at just 1,057kg and boasting the best fuel efficiency of any MX-5 ever, it’s set to be a huge success.
Furthermore, the Roadster GT variant features auto headlights and wipers, heated piano black mirrors, heated leather upholstery, climate control, keyless entry, electrochromatic rear-view mirror and Mazda’s proprietary MZD Connect nine-speaker BOSE infotainment system, which also boasts satellite navigation.
There’s also a ‘Kuroi’ package that includes a more aggressive bodykit and metallic paint, making this MX-5 one of the most customisable ever!
