New Toyota Supra to be Part of Gazoo Performance Brand
New report suggests upcoming Toyota Supra to be launched under firm’s Gazoo Racing motorsports division.
According to the latest rumour surrounding the highly-anticipated new Toyota Supra, the successor to the Japanese firm’s iconic sports car will be launched under the name of its official motorsport division, Gazoo Racing.
It’s thought that the Gazoo brand will lend itself to a number of street-legal performance cars, with a focus on hybrid powertrains. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the new Supra is destined to be a hybrid, but it is a distinct possibility.
Speaking to Autocar at the Monte Carlo Rally, the boss of Gazoo Racing, Koei Saga, said producing such a halo hybrid model was a ‘dream’ of his. He also hinted that Gazoo’s road car team was already utilising the brand’s racing hybrid powertrain technology, which powers both its World Endurance Championship LMP1 racer and hybrid-V8 Prius that competes in Japan’s Super GT 300 class.
The BMW-Toyota joint venture Supra has been linked with some sort of twin-turbo V6 powertrain, but there’s been no hard evidence to suggest the car will be a hybrid.
Despite not actually revealing exactly which car would top the Gazoo line-up, the new Supra is definitely a firm favourite. So we can probably expect to see a Gazoo Supra or Toyota Supra Gazoo sometime in the future.
Toyota’s new 210-horsepower, rally-inspired Yaris is expected to be the first car released in Europe under the Gazoo moniker. And, if Saga has his way, there will be a full range of Gazoo models produced for the market going forward.
