Nissan Set Their Sights on the FWD Nürburgring lap record
If you thought that European hot hatches were the only ones worth writing home about then think again. Nissan are confidently throwing their hat into the ring – the Nürburgring!
Who makes the fastest hot hatch – the Europeans or the Japanese? Well it looks as though we’re all about to find out as Nissan have made their intentions very clear when it comes to the Nürburgring FWD lap record.
The Nürburgring, it seems, is like the Holy Grail for automakers and they’ll do anything to claim bragging rights over each other at this historic venue.
It’s therefore no surprise that Nissan want to make their mark. Especially as the front-wheel-drive lap record honours have been being passed back and forth between Renault and Seat over the last few years, with the former currently holding all the bragging rights at present.
However, let’s not forget Honda, who’ve been lurking in the background making their intentions to unleash the new Civic Type R at the Nürburgring known to all.
But, for now at least, it looks as though Nissan are going to put a new Nismo version of their Pulsar hatchback through its paces at the legendary German track. Although, if it’s going to stand any chance at all then it’ll need to boast, at the very least, around 300 horsepower, huge brakes, firm suspension and some kind of trick differential.
You might be wondering why Nissan would want to steal this elusive title from their sister company. The fact of the matter is that despite sharing a common CEO, Renault and Nissan function as two very individual companies – think of it as a kind of sibling rivalry.
So with the current Nürburgring front-wheel-drive lap record set just a few weeks ago by a specially developed Renault Megane RS275 Trophy-R, all eyes are now firmly on Nissan.
Can their Nissan Pulsar Nismo beat the Renault’s time of 7:54.36? We shall see…
