Subaru Reveals WRX STi Time Attack Ahead of Isle of Man TT
The Subaru WRX STi Time Attack has been built with one goal in mind: breaking the current Isle of Man TT lap record. But is it a realistic goal?
The Isle of Man TT is just around the corner and Subaru is hoping that a new road-legal version of its iconic WRX STi will be able to set a new lap record on the infamous British time trial circuit.
Teaming up once more with British-based Prodrive – which worked with Subaru back when the Japanese firm was winning rally titles like they were going out of fashion – Subaru is hoping that the partnership will once again bring success.
Backed by Subaru USA, the WRX STi Time Attack (as it’s been dubbed) will be piloted around the Isle of Man circuit by rally driver Mark Higgins.
Back in 2014, Higgins managed an incredible 187km/h over almost 60km of the TT road circuit in another WRX STi, setting a best time of 19 minutes 26 seconds.
During that run, his car had modified suspension, sticky Dunlop tyres, a roll cage and a fire extinguisher. We’re not yet sure what the Time Attack car boasts in the way of upgrades, but its wide-body, differing ride height and totally redesigned aero all hint at significant changes across the board.
Subaru claim the WRX STi Time Attack is still road legal, even though it’s expected to be significantly faster than the production version.
Subaru of America’s national manager of product communications, Dominick Infante, said: “This is one of the most amazing road courses in the world and the Isle of Man TT is one of the most exciting races of the year. We have previously run the TT Course in near-stock Subaru WRX STIs, but this year we set out to design the ultimate WRX STI for this circuit.”
It’s very unlikely that the WRX STi Time Attack will break the outright motorcycle lap record of 17 minutes 3.7 seconds set by John McGuinness in 2015, but we’re sure they’ll give it a damn good go.
The Isle of Man TT begins this year on May 30. Check out the official website for more details.
