Subaru’s BRZ STI Concept to be Unveiled in Tokyo Later This Month
Subaru will unveil a more aggressive, STI-enhanced version of its BRZ sports coupe at this month’s Tokyo Auto Show. Let’s hope it boasts some performance upgrades…
The BRZ has proved to be a popular car amongst rear-wheel-drive car fans and Subaru lovers alike, but many people have complained that it lacks all important power. That’s why we were intrigued to learn about Subaru’s plans to reveal an STI Sport Concept version of the BRZ coupe at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon later this month.
At first glance, it seems the Subaru BRZ STI Sport concept could deliver. After all, it bears the badge of Subaru’s STI performance division. However, it seems the concept car will focus more on cosmetics than power and performance.
Subaru describes the BRZ STI concept as a more mature take on the sports coupe – interpret that as you will because we only have one photo of it (above) at present.
We do know, though, that it has 18-inch alloy wheels and a handful of STI design enhancements, including a more aggressive front lip spoiler and side skirts. There are also what appear to be Brembo-branded red brake calipers. On the inside, the concept has been kitted out with a Bordeaux Red interior (a rich burgundy colour).
Joining the BRZ concept will be a second STI Sport concept based on the JDM-only WRX S4. Like the BRZ, the WRX S4 concept will get a number of interior and exterior styling enhancements, but we don’t know what they will be as Subaru hasn’t yet released an image of the vehicle ahead of its Tokyo Auto Salon debut.
If it turns out that the BRZ STI concept is literally just an exercise in interior and exterior styling, many fans of the coupe will be feeling disappointed. Ever since it was introduced, people have been hoping that Subaru would introduce a more performance-oriented version of the BRZ, which squeezes more power out of the 2.0-litre boxer-four engine that currently produces 205-horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque.
That’s because while the BRZ is extremely entertaining to drive, it isn’t exactly fast…
