Subaru WRX STI S208 revealed ahead of Tokyo debut

Subaru has lifted the lid on its WRX STI S208 high-performance sedan. But what can we expect?

The Subaru WRX STI S208 is due to make its official debut at next month’s Tokyo Motor Show, but that hasn’t stopped Subaru from unveiling it ahead of schedule.

Based on the WRX STI, the S208 will be a limited run model that will go on sale in Japan on October 25 this year. It builds on the 2015 Subaru S207 Concept, which boasted an uprated version of the standard model’s 2.0-litre turbo boxer engine and had a much more track-focussed exterior and interior.

The S208’s engine, suspension, interior and exterior have been specifically developed by Subaru and STI to make the “ultimate driving car that offers the best ever performance and quality in the S series”.

Only 450 units will be produced and they’ll only be available in Japan on a “sale by lottery” basis.

While final specifications won’t be revealed until the Tokyo Motor Show, we do know that the S208 will be both lighter and more powerful than its predecessor (the S207). A carbon-fibre panel roof replaces the regular model’s steel roof, lowering the centre of gravity and helping the S208 shed some pounds.

A more aggressive front splitter, new alloy wheels (probably by BBS), a prominent rear wing and an STI pink pinstripe just above the rear diffuser finish the S208’s look.

On the inside, the S208 features special bucket seats with leather trim and contrasting white accents. There are also more pink STI trimmings.

All eyes will now be on the Tokyo Motor Show to see exactly what engine the S208 will get…
