Toyota makes GT86 Shooting Brake Concept a reality
At a recent Toyota 86 enthusiasts’ festival in Sydney, the Japanese car giant revealed an intriguing hatchback concept of the popular GT86. Here’s what we know…
The Toyota GT86 is a much-loved vehicle here in Australia. But for some car connoisseurs, it’s always lacked a nice big rear end. Until now…
Love it or hate it, the GT86 Shooting Brake Concept that we’re about to introduce you to is pretty damn unique.
First dreamt up by Toyota’s Australian design division, the GT96 Shooting Brake Concept started out as 1:4 scale clay model. Reports say that said clay model was seen back in November 2014 by Toyota 86’s global chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, who made it his mission to make the car become a reality in Japan.
“I liked it so much I arranged for my expert takumi prototype craftsmen to hand-build the Shooting Brake concept based on the Australian design,” he said.
The concept effectively turns the sporty 86 into a much more practical hatchback, which would undoubtedly make it appeal more to families.
Unveiled against a stunning Sydney Harbour Bridge backdrop, the GT86 Shooting Brake Concept is a one-off design study, which is fully functional and has apparently already been put through its paces on Toyota test tracks.
Talking about the concept, Toyota Australia’s chief designer Nicolas Hogios said: “we made the conscious decision to keep as much of the original 86 as possible, only changing what was absolutely necessary,” – a fact that will please many 86 fans.
Speaking when it was revealed at a special Toyota 86 enthusiasts’ festival, Tada told onlookers that the concept is nicely weighted and offers a driving feel that is even more neutral in tight corners than the coupe version.
However, despite all the hype surrounding it, the GT86 Shooting Brake Concept has been built to merely gauge customer reaction, and will not see full production.
But Tada said: “We never say never, and I would love this concept to become a production reality.”
So it’s a rather mixed message overall then that will have left the crowd wondering whether they can expect to see the concept in showrooms at some point in the future. Toyota could have more invested into this than they are letting on. Let’s hope so…
